Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374) is considered the father of humanism and the literary creator of the Renaissance. His greatest work, “The Scattered Poems” (Rime sparse), is a collection of 366 poems, written independently of each other over his entire adult life. Petrarch arranged them in a sequence that tells a story: a young man devoutly loving God while hopelessly longing for the enigmatic Laura, the beautiful young woman he sees in church on Good Friday, April 6, 1327. The collection tells the tale of his inner torment trying to keep God at the center of his life while unable to abandon thoughts and hopes of earthly fulfillment.
