The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Denver will host certain special prayers and Masses today, Monday, April 21, for Pope Francis on the occasion of his passing. The faithful are welcome to join in person or spiritually, at a distance.

More information on other prayers, Masses, services and memorials is forthcoming.

Mourning Bells

In solemn mourning, the Cathedral, as a minor basilica — a papal church — tolled its Requiem bells during the entirety of the 11 a.m. hour today.

Prayers for a Deceased Pope

The Very Reverend Samuel Morehead, Rector of the Cathedral Basilica, offered special prayers from the rites of the Church for Pope Francis at 11 a.m. today, including the lighting of a vigil candle for the deceased Pontiff.

Rosary for the Pope

At 11:30 a.m., Father Morehead led the Cathedral in praying a Rosary for the repose of Pope Francis's soul.

First Mass for the Pope

At 12:10 p.m., Most Reverend Samuel Aquila, Archbishop of Denver, celebrated a special Easter Monday Mass for the Repose of the Soul of Pope Francis.

The Cathedral has created a place of mourning for Pope Francis at the side altar of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, given the Pope's devotion to the Sacred Heart and that devotion's historical links to the Jesuit order. You are invited to light candles and place flowers here.
