Deacon Al Sandoval, a devoted servant of Christ and a pioneering leader in the diaconate, passed away on September 7, 2024. He was a trailblazer in the Archdiocese of Denver, dedicating his life to ministry, service and the formation of deacons.

Born with a deep love for his faith, Deacon Sandoval answered God’s call to serve and was ordained on April 2, 1977, by Archbishop Casey. Over the years, he faithfully ministered at several parishes, including All Souls in Englewood, Our Lady of Guadalupe in Denver, St. Cajetan in Denver, St. Pius in Aurora, and St. Joseph in Denver.

His heart was always set on strengthening the identity of Christ the Servant in the deacon community, ensuring that those called to ministry were deeply grounded in theology, spirituality and human formation.

A true visionary, Deacon Al was the first deacon to hold the position of Director of Deacons in the Archdiocese of Denver. In this role, he was instrumental in shaping the diaconate, providing leadership and guidance to countless men answering the call to serve. His passion for ministry extended beyond deacons, as he worked tirelessly to revive and foster unity between priests and deacons, recognizing that collaboration was essential for the greater good of the Kingdom of God.

“Deacon Al’s legacy is one of lasting impact. Through his leadership, he laid a firm foundation upon which future generations of deacons could build. He emphasized the importance of a well-rounded formation, ensuring that deacons were not only theologically prepared but also deeply connected to their vocation as married and celibate men and faithful ministers of Christ. His vision embraced the fullness of diaconal ministry through liturgy, the Word and acts of charity, always reflecting Christ’s servant heart,” said Deacon Ernest Martinez, Director of Deacons for the Archdiocese of Denver.

Beyond his ministerial work, Deacon Al was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Frances, who preceded him in death on October 26, 2015. Together, they built a family rooted in faith and love. He is survived by their children Marie, Rosanne, David, Michael, Laura, Matthew and Paul, who carry forward his legacy of faith and service.

“Deacon Al’s contributions to the Archdiocese of Denver will continue to bear fruit for generations to come. His unwavering commitment to the Church, his leadership in forming deacons, and his dedication to building unity between clergy and laity have left an indelible mark,” said Deacon Joseph Donohoe, former Director of Deacons who succeeded Deacon Sandoval.

A man of deep faith, compassion and wisdom, Deacon Sandoval now rests in the loving embrace of the Lord he served so faithfully. While he will be dearly missed, his impact on the Church and the lives of those he guided and inspired will endure forever.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated by Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila and concelebrated by Bishop Jorge Rodriguez, Ph.D., at Light of the World Parish in Littleton on September 19, 2024.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.
