Sister Maureen Murphy, 90, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance, NE. She was born July 13, 1931 in Stuart, Nebraska to Jeremiah Patrick and Sophia Theresa (Kaup) Murphy and was given the name of Catherine Benedicta Murphy.
Sister Maureen followed the Lord’s call to the Sisters of St. Francis and entered as a candidate on September 8, 1949 at Marycrest Convent in Denver, CO. She professed her vows on August 15, 1952 and took the name of Sister M. Maureen. She received her B.S. degree in August 1959 from Regis College in Denver. She then obtained her M.A. in Theology from St. Francis College in Joliet, IL in 1965.
Her ministry of teaching took her to every school in the Sister’s Province beginning in 1952 at St. Mary’s in O’Neill, NE. Her other assignments took her to St. Elizabeth’s in Denver, CO, Rushville, NE, Holy Rosary Mission, SD, St. Mary’s in O’Neill, NE, St. Agnes in Scottsbluff, NE and St. Francis, SD. From 1974 through 1977 she lived in Rome, Italy and taught at the Generalate. Upon her return to Alliance, NE, she served in various Pastoral Ministries in Minot, ND, Alliance, NE, Manderson, SD, and Denver, CO until retiring in 2006 living in both Denver and Alliance.

She is survived by her siblings, Cornelius Murphy and Henry (Helen) Murphy of Stuart, NE, Sophie Ingraham of Aurora, CO, Jane (Tom) LaHood of Omaha, NE, Eileen Denning of Avoca, IA, Dr. James (Cherie) Murphy of Norfolk, NE, Rita Murphy of Paonia, CO and John (Alissandra) Murphy of New York, NY, numerous nieces and nephews and also her Franciscan Family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty Ann, who died in infancy, Mary Robertcht and her brother, Frank Murphy.
Funeral services will be Thursday, June 30 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance, NE with Father Matt Koperski and Father Tim Stoner officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. A wake service will be Wednesday, June 29 at 7:00 p.m. at the church.
