Sister Marianna Bauder, SCL

September 13, 1943 - January 21, 2019

Sister Marianna Bauder, 75, a Sister of Charity of Leavenworth (SCL) for 57 years, died on Jan. 21, 2019 at Saint Luke’s Cushing Hospital, Leavenworth, Kan. Sister Marianna served in leadership roles in the healthcare ministry, within the religious community, and on many boards of directors.
Mary Anna and her twin brother Joe were born Sept. 13, 1943 in Leavenworth. Elmer and Gertrude Zeugin Bauder later expanded their family with four more children. Mary Anna entered the SCL Community in August 1961. She professed vows as Sister Gertrude Therese on Sept. 2, 1963, and later took the name Marianna.
Initially a grade school teacher, Sister realized that her calling was in healthcare. She earned a degree in chemistry and biology from Saint Mary College, Leavenworth, and completed a medical technology internship. Sister Marianna worked in the laboratory at St. Mary’s Hospital, Grand Junction, Colo., for eight years.
Her innate talents, a master’s in administration from the University of Notre Dame and a fellowship in SCL hospitals transitioned Sister Marianna into leadership positions. She was assistant administrator at St. Francis Hospital, Topeka, Kan.; and CEO and president of St. Mary’s Hospital, Grand Junction, and then of Saint Joseph Hospital, Denver. Her concern for the poor involved her in helping establish Marillac Clinic, Grand Junction, and Clínica Tepeyac, Denver. Under Sister’s leadership from November 1990 to August 1997, Saint Joseph Hospital excelled in quality and expanded its global reach, providing equipment and supplies for health facilities in struggling countries. Sister Marianna was a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and received numerous awards for her leadership.
In her next ministry, Sister Marianna served on the SCL Community Council for 12 years. She subsequently was the first executive director of Leaven Ministries, the new sponsor of SCL Health. Sister moved to the SCL Mother House in 2012 where she was assistant coordinator from October 2015 to May 2017. In May 2017, she moved to Ross Hall.
Preceding Sister Marianna in death were her parents and her SCL relatives, Sister Jeanne Marie Zeugin (aunt) and Sister Helen Bristow (cousin). Survivors include her brothers Joe (Leslie) Bauder, Leavenworth, and Tom (Tammy) Bauder, Easton, Kan.; her sisters, Ellen (Keith) Hustings, Leavenworth, Rose Pettyjohn, Denham Springs, La., and Jane Bauder, Lansing, Kan.; nieces and nephews; and her SCL Community.
