Father Melvin Thompson

Father Melvin Thompson passed away peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2016. He was 81 years old.
Thompson, or Mel, as he came to be known, was born Sept. 14, 1935 in Pinedale, Wyo. He attended the University of Wyoming from 1953-1957, where he earned a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Botany and Zoology, with a minor in English. Several years after college, he entered St. Lawrence Seminary in Mt. Calvary, Wis., where he studied from 1960 - 1961 before transferring to St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, Colo., and finishing his studies there.
He was ordained a priest by Bishop Leo C. Byrne for the Diocese of Wichita in Kansas on May 31, 1967. Father Thompson served at several parishes in the Archdiocese of Denver, most principally as pastor at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Northglenn from 1977-1979; pastor at St. Vincent de Paul Parish from 1979-1989; and pastor at Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Lakewood from 1989-2001. He was also Dean of the West Denver Deanery from 1991-2000.
Most recently, Father Thompson was assistant pastor at St. Thomas More Parish from 2001-2010. After a short leave of absence in 2010, he retired in 2011, all the while retaining residency at St. Thomas More until 2015. His last years were spent at the Gardens of St. Elizabeth, a retirement and senior living community.
