Deacon Samuel R. Trujillo

June 12, 1935 - December 17, 2016

Deacon Samuel R. Trujillo passed away on December 17, 2016 at the age of 81. Deacon Sam ministered to the faithful in at St. Augustine in Brighton, Our Lady Mother of the Church in Welby and Our Lady of Grace in Commerce City during his active ministry.

Born Jose Richardo Samuel Trujillo in Costilla, New Mexico, to Lucas and Enafelia, he came into the world on June 12th, 1935 and was baptized at Sacred Heart parish in Costilla on September 29th 1935. He also received Confirmation at Sacred Heart parish and his 1st Holy Communion at St. Michael’s parish in Canon City, CO. He spent much of his youth working on the family farm with his dad and going to school. He later moved to Brighton, CO and graduated from Brighton High School where he was on the basketball team.

On the 3rd of May, 1957, he married Dorthy Mae Lovato. Sam was living in Brighton at the time and met Dorothy only to find out that she was raised near his home in New Mexico. During their 59 years of marriage, they had six children. Sam started in the construction industry and quickly earned his Journeyman level while working on the Chapel the Air Force Academy. He also started a construction business where he specialized in carpentry. He loved doing woodwork.

Sam was an active member of St. Augustine parish in Brighton when he received a call to pursue the Diaconate. Then, on March 22, 1975, Deacon Sam was ordained by Archbishop James Casey at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Denver, Colorado. He was in the second class of men to be ordained as Permanent Deacons in the Archdiocese.

Along with his parish responsibilities, Deacon Sam did ministry for the St. Vincent de Paul Society and had a particular love for the poor and the migrants. He also had a great spiritual prayer life. “It is appropriate that Deacon Sam would pass away during the preparation season of Advent.” stated Deacon Joseph Donohoe, Director of Deacon Personnel. “As it seems his latter years were scripted in quiet preparation and prayer.”

He is survived by wife, Dorothy; his children Samuel, Jr. (Faith), Doris (Jim) Candelarie, Anthony, Paul (Julie), Ken, and David (Robin); 17 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; sister Nora Romero and brother Benino (Alice); and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by parents, Lucas and Enafelia and siblings, Perfecto, William, Mary, Ramon, Michael, and Lucas.

A Vigil for Deacon Sam was held at St. Augustine parish in Brighton on the 21st of December 2016 at 7:00 pm. The Funeral Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception at 10:00 am on the 22nd of December 2016. He was laid to rest immediately after the Funeral Mass at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Golden, CO.
