Deacon Geno Torrez passed away on December 20, 2017 at the age of 70. Deacon Geno ministered to the faithful in at Presentation of Our Lord Parish in Denver throughout his ordained ministry.
Born Eugene Torrez at Denver General Hospital to John and Rebecca Torrez, on January 5, 1947 and was baptized at St. Cajetan’s Parish on March 9th of the same year. Geno grew up around Denver and spend his early years in the housing projects, playing baseball and helping with community events. He developed a hard-working character early on in his life and provided income for his family which included 5 brothers and 10 sisters. He began working at a local supermarket at an early age. Eventually, he would get his high school education and work up the career ladder as a manager in the grocery industry.
On March 1, 1966, he married Marlene Linda Perea whom he met at a youth center dance when he was 16 years old. There 53-year marriage included two children; Denise (Matthew) and Armando Torrez. Geno and Linda also have 5 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren.
On June 12, 2004, he was ordained a Deacon in the Archdiocese of Denver by Archbishop Charles Chaput and was immediately assigned to Presentation of Our Lord Parish where he was also the Pastoral Assistant. He continued to work as a Deacon at Presentation until his death.
Deacon Geno was the very involved with the parish particularly in Marriage Preparation and the Charismatic Renewal. “Deacon Geno was a brother in Christ to everyone he met.” said Deacon Joseph Donohoe, Director of Deacon Personnel, “What a blessing to have a Deacon whose confidence and faith in Our Lord attracted many people back to their faith and their family.”
A Vigil for Deacon Geno was held at Presentation of Our Lord Parish in Denver on December 26th, 017, the Feast of Deacon St. Steven at 7:00 pm. The principal celebrant for the Funeral Mass was Archbishop Samuel Aquila. The Mass was also at the Basilica Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at 10:00 am on the December 27th, 2017. He was laid to rest at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Golden, CO immediately after the Mass.
