Denver's own "Angel of Charity," Servant of God Julia Greeley, is the subject of a new, free 13-minute-long documentary produced by the Colorado Capuchin Franciscans.
The short film includes interviews with Father Blaine Burkey, O.F.M. Cap., who wrote the book on Julia's life; Mary Leisring, president of the Julia Greeley Guild; Father Eric Zegeer, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Denver, which was Julia Greeley's parish; and Jean Torkelson, executive director of the Julia Greeley Home, a local nonprofit that serves women in need.
Over the course of the documentary, the interviewees retell the courageous witness of Servant of God Julia Greeley: her deep devotion, her profound acts of charity, and her courageous, faith-filled response to the challenges she faced.
The former slave from Hannibal, Missouri, was known for her dedication to the people in her community, bringing them things they needed — often under cover of night so as not to embarrass them.
A parishioner of Sacred Heart Parish in Denver, Servant of God Julia Greeley and her little red wagon were well-known through the Five Points and RiNo neighborhoods. Despite crippling arthritis, she walked innumerable miles to collect and distribute alms, to evangelize firefighters and to spread devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Released on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, Julia Greeley: Servant of the Sacred Heart is available free on YouTube.
