The Stations of the Cross are a Lenten Friday staple in Catholic churches across the world. As the Church spiritually walks with Jesus towards Calvary, the 14-stop journey of Stations of the Cross offers the faithful an opportunity to physically walk the spiritual journey.
At Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Lakewood last week, some young parishioners had the opportunity to lead the community on that spiritual journey.
About 20 youth — some as young as five years old! — led the Stations of the Cross, making their way around the church in prayer and reflection. Afterwards, the community was invited to a meatless supper in the parish hall.
For Mazie Jackson, 14, the evening of prayer and community was a beautiful way to "practice your faith" and "build community," she told the JeffCo Transcript.
In fact, the evening fit the spirit of the season, Jackson explained.
"It’s about cleansing our souls and preparing for Easter. (Lent) helps us refresh our faith," she said.
Father Henri Tshibambe, pastor of Our Lady of Fatima, agreed, adding just how important it is for younger parishioners to learn their faith and take up leadership roles. By walking with Jesus during the Stations of the Cross and beyond, he said, they are learning to do "what Jesus Christ did."
