Featuring both local artists and musicians from around the globe, Concerts at the Cathedral Basilica highlight sacred music while re-establishing a tradition from the cathedral’s early days. The fall season opens at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 15 with Duet Azure, a duo of soprano Ekaterina Kotcherguina and a piano accompanist.
Having performed in Europe and across the United States, the pair will bring their talent to the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Denver in songs from works such as Handel’s Messiah and sacred scripture.
Dating back to the Cathedral’s beginnings, this concert series originally established weekly sacred music performances, offering the public a place to gather and enjoy an hour of holy harmonies free of charge. After a decades-long break, the music ministry of the Cathedral Basilica, led by Phil Bordeleau, director of sacred music and organist at the Cathedral, seeks to do the same every month.
“An outreach of the Cathedral’s music ministry, the concert series provides important sacred music to those who may not otherwise have an opportunity to visit the Cathedral and hear its musicians during Mass,” Bordeleau said. “Because the concerts are not ticketed events (only a free-will offering is collected), we never turn anyone away from the opportunity to hear these masterworks of sacred music. The concerts also keep the Cathedral’s music ministry in the collective minds of the musical community of Denver, bearing witness of the commitment to fine musical art in the Cathedral Basilica.”
Now in its tenth season, the fall concert series showcases programs played on the cathedral’s incredible pipe organ, choral and instrumental ensembles and vocal soloists. All are welcome to enjoy the concerts at no cost; a free-will offering is appreciated and shared with the artists to defray the series’ expenses.
