The Servite fathers at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in north Denver will see their founders a little more clearly this month. Art conservators with the Western Center of Conservation and Fine Arts completed a restoration project on “Seven Founders of the Servite Order Receiving the Habit from the Queen of Heaven,” a painting by famed French artist Pierre Rochard that dates back to the early 1900s. Camilla Van Vooren, left, and Hays Shoop, above right, cleaned and renovated the depiction of Mary with the Servite order’s Seven Holy Founders. The men were cloth merchants from Florence, Italy, who left everything in 1233 to live a life of poverty and penance under the name Friar Servants of Mary. They were canonized in 1888.
