11 men prepare for diaconate ordination

After years of study and guidance from the Holy Spirit, 11 men will be ordained into the permanent diaconate June 20.

Archbishop Samuel Aquila will ordain the men during a 10 a.m. Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in downtown Denver.

Those to be ordained deacons are: August Leonard Cordova, Michael John Daly, Timothy Marshall Hathaway, Robert Alan Hoffman, Mladen Martinovic, Marc Nestorick, Efrain Pruneda, Gregory Charles Reynolds, Stanley William Rymes, David Ralph Thompson, Jr., and Dennis Michael Wallisch.

The men have been studying through the Archdiocese of Denver’s St. Francis School of Theology for Deacons. The candidates have undergone academic and spiritual formation to prepare for their ministry that includes officiating at baptisms, weddings and funerals, distributing Communion and preaching.

The word “diaconate” comes from the Greek word diakonia, which means “service.” The diaconate is one of the three ranks of holy orders and dates back to the time of the Apostles.

The June 20 liturgy will be available for live viewing online at www.archden.org/livestream.
